Following the deterioration of electricity supply in some parts of Nigeria, members of the organized labour have taken their protest to the headquarters of Electricity Distribution Companies in Ibadan, Umuahia, and Yola as well as the National Electricity Regulatory Commission of Nigeria, NERC in Adamawa state.
The national headquarters of NLC issued the sealing of electricity offices.
Members of the organized labour in Oyo State had carried placards with inscriptions such as “Nigeria Workers and people reject the increase in electricity tariff” and “astronomical increase in electricity tariff is not acceptable”.
In Abia State, some of the placards read, “DISCOs are reaping where they did not sow, “the abysmal performance of DISCOs is no longer acceptable” and NERC is no longer serving the masses”, among other reasons.
In their protest on Monday, the organized labour called for a reversal of the electricity tariff, noting that the protest would continue until the increment is reversed.
Addressing the protesters at the headquarters of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC office at Ring Road, the Oyo State NLC Chairman, Kayode Martins said the electricity tariff hike had brought more hardship to the masses, saying Nigerian workers would not accept the increment in tariffby.
Also addressing the protesters at the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, office in Umuahia, Abia State capital situated at Bende Road, opposite the Umuahia North LGA secretariat, Okoro Ogbonnaya, Abia State Chairman of NLC, called for the reversal of electricity tariff to 65KWN and for the provision of prepaid meters for electricity consumers in the State.
“It is a directive from the national union. The DISCOs are not supplying power in accordance with the bills they are giving,” Ogbonnaya said.
In Adamawa, the State NLC Chairman Emmanuel Fashe said the action was to protest the exorbitant electricity tariff and indiscriminate charges were beyond the ability and capability of Nigerians.
“Our action to picket these offices was sequel to the directive from our headquarters and it is a nationwide action.
“The tariff hike was from N65 to N223, which is far above reasonable charges.
“The only services that were yet to be taxed by the federal government are the oxygen we breathe and the rainfall on our farms,” he said.
