Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has been denied bail once more. The decision comes from the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Binta Nyako.
Kanu is facing a seven-count charge of treasonable felony brought against him by the Nigerian government. His lawyers had filed an application seeking bail or house arrest. However, Justice Nyako dismissed all their requests.
This is not the first time Kanu’s bail plea has been rejected. The Judge cited previous denials and argued that the Court of Appeal is the appropriate venue to challenge such decisions.
The court also rejected Kanu’s request to be transferred from the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, to the Kuje Custodial Centre.
Justice Nyako did, however, grant him access to his legal team, allowing up to five lawyers to visit him on designated days.
Kanu’s re-arrest in June 2021 and subsequent detention have been a source of controversy. The separatist leader’s supporters have criticised the government’s handling of the case.
The trial is expected to continue, with the possibility of an appeal to the Court of Appeal regarding the bail denial.
