Renewed violence has erupted in Ebonyi state, with gunmen launching a deadly attack on Ikachi village in the Akparata area of Effium in Ohaukwu local government area.
According to reports, the attackers struck early Sunday morning, leaving a trail of death and destruction.
Two villagers were brutally killed and beheaded in the raid. The attackers abducted seven others, including five women and two men. Additionally, at least twelve residents suffered gunshot wounds, and five houses were burned to the ground.
Locals claim the gunmen were warriors from the neighbouring Ezza community. Ezza and Effium have a long history of violent clashes. The motives behind the attack remain unclear, but the incident highlights the ongoing tensions in the two communities.
Police spokesperson DSP Joshua Ukandu confirmed the deadly attack. The police have yet to make any arrests, but they assured the public of a diligent investigation.
“We are aware of the attack and the command is on top of the situation,” DSP Ukandu said. “The command is also investigating the attack to ascertain the root cause of the matter.”
Security forces have been deployed to the area to restore order and search for the abducted villagers.
