Two weeks after the killing of five Nigerian soldiers in Obingwa LGA of Abia State, the military has arrested scores of suspects in connection with the attack.
The suspects, who are currently being interrogated, are believed to have played various roles in the ambush that resulted in the death of the soldiers.
According to Defence Headquarters spokesperson Maj.-General Edward Buba, the arrests were made in a series of raids conducted by a combined team of military and security operatives.
The suspects, suspected to be gunmen affiliated with the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and the Eastern Security Network, ESN, were apprehended in various IPOB/ESN camps across the State such as at Igboro Forest in Arochukwu LGA among others.
Following the attack, the military vowed to retaliate for the killing of its personnel, promising to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“It is absolutely imperative that the military retaliate against this dastardly act against troops,” said Maj.-Gen. Buba. “The military would be fierce in its response. We would bring overwhelming military pressure on the group to ensure their total defeat.”
At the DHQ bi-weekly press briefing on Thursday, Buba said “Operation Udoka” troops conducted extensive operations across Abia State in response to the attack. These operations resulted in the apprehension of a large number of individuals suspected of involvement.
However, investigations revealed that some of those arrested were not connected to the attack. These individuals have been released while those suspected of playing a role in the killings remain in custody and are assisting with investigations.
“Those in detention are assisting troops to locate other camps, sleeper cells and high-profile individuals involved in the activities of the terrorist group,” Buba said.
