Nigerian superstar Rema has achieved another major milestone with his hit song “Calm Down.” According to Chart Data, the song featuring Selena Gomez has officially surpassed one billion on-demand streams in the United States, a first for both Afrobeats and African music.

“Calm Down”, released in February 2022 as a single off Rema’s “Rave and Roses” album, took the world by storm, especially in the US.

The remix with Selena Gomez became a megahit, setting records left and right. It peaked at number three on the prestigious Billboard Hot 100 chart and spent an incredible 52 weeks on the list.

The song also reached the top of the Billboard Pop Airplay chart, another first for Afrobeats. This dominance was further solidified by the RIAA awarding the remix a 6x platinum certification

“Calm Down” also holds the distinction of being the first Afrobeats track to ever surpass one billion streams on Spotify. The music video for the original version boasts 596 million views on YouTube, while the remix has garnered a staggering 894 million views.

Additionally, the original version of “Calm Down” was recognised by Guinness World Records as the first number-one song on the Middle Eastern and North Africa, MENA, regional streaming chart.

Last year, Chart Data described the track as the “most successful African song of all time.”
