Hundreds of protesters stormed the Kaduna State Government House on Thursday, demanding the arrest and prosecution of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
The demonstration comes after the Kaduna State House of Assembly recently indicted El-Rufai for alleged abuse of office and misappropriation of funds to the tune of N423 billion during his tenure as governor from 2015 to 2023.
The protesters, under the banner of Kaduna Citizens Watch for Good Governance, KCWGG, marched from the popular UTC bus stop to the Government House, chanting slogans and holding placards that read “El-Rufai Must Answer for Kaduna’s Woes” and “EFCC, Arrest El-Rufai Now!”
A leader of the group, Comrade Duniya, presented their demands to a government delegation led by Deputy Governor Hajiya Hadiza Balarabe.
“Our state has endured financial mismanagement, abuse of power, and a growing debt burden for the past eight years,” Duniya told the press during the protest.
“While we were struggling to come to terms with the voodoo former Governor El-Rufai and his cabinet members deployed to cover the faces of Kaduna people from seeing all these atrocities, El-Rufai in his characteristically lousy manner, gathered members of his well-fed family to Sallah feast where he tacitly called on them in Hausa language to bring down the government of Senator Uba Sani, which we believe it is as a result of the sin of allowing the legislative arm of government to work for the first time in over eight years.”
The protesters urged the current governor, Uba Sani, to invite the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and other relevant agencies to investigate El-Rufai and those implicated in the alleged financial crimes. They also called for the recovery of the alleged looted funds.
El-Rufai had earlier dismissed the report by the State Assembly as a politically motivated hatchet job, but the protesters and the civil society group are adamant that he must be held accountable for his actions.
Deputy Governor Balarabe assured the protesters that their concerns would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities.
