Move is to render support in response to the economic distress
On Thursday, the House of Representatives voted to cut their salaries by 50 per cent for the next month in response to the economic distress.
This critical decision comes at a time when the country is facing a severe economic crisis, and citizens are gearing up for a week-long street protest that will start on 1st August and end on 10th August 2024.
The move was in response to a motion by Hon. Isiaka Ayokunle, representing Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency in Ogun State, calling on Nigerians to reconsider their planned protest against the government.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, however, suggested the temporary salary cut, which was supported by the majority of lawmakers.
According to Kalu, the cut will be used to mitigate the rising cost of food items in the country to provide succour to Nigerians.
The House Committees on Humanitarian Affairs and Finance and Budget are expected to implement the changes.
Each lawmaker earns N600,000 per month, so halving the salaries of all 360 members will amount to N108,000,000.
Pilot News could not verify if the salary cut would take effect this month or next.
