The Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, has slid down the FIFA World Rankings to land at 39th place in the latest update.
The news stings for Nigerians, especially considering the team’s strong showing earlier this year. Nigeria was ranked 28th in February after an impressive run in the Africa Cup of Nations which saw them finish second-place.
While FIFA has not pinpointed the exact reasons for the decline, it is likely due to the team’s lacklustre performances in the World Cup qualifiers and recent friendlies.
Nigeria drew 1-1 against South Africa in their fourth game of the qualifiers and lost 2-1 to the Benin Republic in the following match. Also, recent friendly matches have not been stellar, with a 2-1 win against Ghana overshadowed by a 2-0 loss to Mali.
This dip in the global rankings affected the team’s continental standings. The Giant of Africa currently sits fifth in the African rankings, behind Morocco, Senegal, Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire.
