To accelerate development across geo-political zones in the country, President Bola Tinubu has signed into law bills establishing a development commission.
They are the Northwest Development Commission (Establishment) Bill, of 2024, and the Southeast Development Commission (Establishment) Bill, of 2023.
A statement by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, explained that the President’s assent to the bills had demonstrated his commitment to ensuring equitable development, inclusive governance, and the provision of qualitative services to Nigerians.
The statement further said President Tinubu believes in building the nation which hinges on fairness, equity, and unity.
The Northwest Development Commission is set up to facilitate the reconstruction of roads, houses, and business premises destroyed by multidimensional crises, and to tackle poverty, literacy levels, ecological problems, and any other related environmental or development challenges within the zone.
Accordingly, the Southeast Development Commission was established to ensure the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses, and other infrastructural damages suffered by the zone, and to tackle ecological problems and other related environmental or developmental challenges in the zone.
There was also the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) established to rebuild infrastructure, foster economic growth, and restore peace and stability in areas affected by conflict, natural disasters, or prolonged neglect.
It will also address the developmental challenges and socio-economic issues in the Northeastern region of the country.
