Some Stakeholders have reacted to the outcome of the Labour Party – LP’s State Congress on Wednesday in Awka, Anambra State capital. The exercise which was largely described as peaceful and harmonious is coming at a time that Anambra state governorship election is expected in sixteen months.

During a telephone interview with the Anambra State Chairman of LP, Mr. Ugochukwu Emeh, he described the congress in one word; “fair.” However, responding to the question of the party’s prospects in Anambra State, Mr. Emeh said that the attraction of the LP speaks for itself. “If you see the speed and eagerness with which people are rushing the party, clearly, the future of the party is bright,” he said.

Similarly, Dr. Obinna Ngonadi has reacted to the outcome of the congress, describing it as peaceful and organized. According to Dr. Ngonadi, “The state congress was very peaceful and organized. There is unity of purpose in the party.” In his reaction to the question of the chances of LP in Anambra State in 2025, Ngonadi said that it would depend on factors like funding, and candidates, among others. “The chances of a political party in Anambra State governorship election depends on the candidate and the capacity to fund the election considering the resources available to the party in power,” Dr. Obinna Ngonadi said.

In politics around the globe, funding remains a major concern and a serious consideration in all political ventures. In Nigeria, it is even more. The political processes are extremely monetized to the effect that once an aspirant expresses a desire to serve, he or she is expected to begin to throw money about as a means to buy goodwill, buy the party, buy the voters, buy supporters, and buy his or her victory. Usually, without the deep pocket to fund these excesses, an aspirant is frequently dismissed as “unserious.”

Labour Party chieftain who hails from Idemili North LGA, Barr. Ifeanyi Mbanusi, also reacted to the state congress, describing it as a new dawn. In his words, “I was very glad with the outcome of the congress at Awka. It has been my wish to see a Labour Party that is as organized as when I joined the party in 2013. In fact, I was very impressed with the way all the delegates comported themselves during the congress. It was indeed a huge success”. As for the prospects of the party in Anambra State, Barr. Mabnusi thinks that the Congress symbolizes consolidation for the party. “With the LP congress at Awka, Labour Party is consolidated in Anambra State… we have already built grassroots presence from the ward congress, local government congress and finally a successful State congress. With the present situation, we have tremendous prospects in the forthcoming election in Anambra state”, Barr. Mbanusi said.

As political parties are now gearing up to commence full dive into the contest for the coming governorship election in Anambra State, it is left to be seen what LP intends to do with its gains in the 2023 General Elections.
