The Federal Government of Nigeria has warned foreign countries to refrain from interfering in Nigeria’s internal matters.
This warning comes in response to the appearance of foreign flags during ongoing protests against economic hardship in the country, particularly in northern states like Kano and Kaduna. Additionally, some foreigners have been arrested on suspicion of sponsoring these protests.
Speaking at the Diplomatic Corps on Wednesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar emphasized Nigeria’s sovereignty and asserted that the country is fully capable of addressing its own challenges without outside intervention.
“While the government continues to work hard through the various reform programmes and measures to address challenges facing Nigeria and Nigerians, it is pertinent to remind us that no nation tolerates foreign interference in its domestic affairs and that of its citizens. Nigeria is not an exception,” he noted.
While the Nigerian government appreciates international support, Tuggar made it clear that any form of foreign interference will not be tolerated.
“The government will take appropriate action against any foreign entity residing in Nigeria that is found to have directly or indirectly supported the protesters by whatever means or seeks to interfere in the internal affairs of the country,” the Minister warned.
He also reassured that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to finding lasting solutions to the nation’s ongoing challenges. He sought the “understanding and collaboration” of the international community in the “ongoing efforts of the Federal Government in addressing the economic challenges confronting the country, to achieve a better life for every Nigerians at home and abroad.”
