… Release Revised License Fees

The Ministry of Education Enugu State has released the 2024 revised schools licensing fees regulation to counter news stating that demandnotice of five million naira, N5 million, was issued to new and existing private schools in the state.

In a circular with Ref number: ENS/MOE/POLICY/0003 signed by the Commissioner for Education, Professor Ndubueze .I. Mbah, the amount to be paid as application fee for registration inspection, licensing inspection, provisional approval fees and academic year license renewal fee were listed.

The Ministry of Education further accused some unlicensed and illegally-run private schools in the state of peddling falsehood against the Ministry in an attempt to blackmail and stampede their way out of the ongoing reforms and sanitization of the education sector.

“Contrary to the fake news that the government had issued a demand notice of N5 million, new and existing private schools in the state were required to either register for provisional approval or have their licenses renewed with between ₦100,000 to ₦300,000 depending on which category the schools fall,” Prof. Mbah said.

The Commissioner for Education on Wednesday citing the extant laws which empowers the Ministry of Education to issue schools licensing fees pointed unlicensed private school owners as the source of the fake news.

“By virtue of the Education Law CAP 37, REVISED LAWS OF ENUGU STATE 2004 and ENUGU STATE OF NIGERIA EDUCATION (AMENDMENT) LAW 2017, Section 56, to ensure minimum standards of Education, to streamline administration, monitoring and supervision of private schools, the Honourable Commissioner for Education has approved the following revised schools licensing fees;”

“Consequences of illegal operation of unlicensed private schools attracts imprisonment of up to 10 years and possible closure of the schools, hence the defaulters resorted to smear campaign against the government.”

Reiterating the state government’s resolve in sanitizing the Education sector, Prof. Mbah, said government will not fold its arms and watch the future of Enugu children destroyed by illegal and unscrupulous schools and proprietors.

He also revealed that the Ministry held repeated engagements with stakeholders in the education space across the state during the revision of the 2024 Enugu State Schools Licensing Fees Regulation and the current levies were approved since June, 2024.
