The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kwara, Sokoto, Adamawa, and Kebbi States have been issued with a six-day deadline by the National Economic Council (NEC) to submit their reports on the proposed establishment of state police.
The directive was part of the outcome of the NEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday, presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Acting governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal stated that most states have submitted their reports except Kwara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and the FCT.
He said failure by the affected states and FCT to meet the deadline will result in being bound by any decisions made by the NEC in their absence.
“These states have until Monday, September 9, to submit their reports or risk being bound by the council’s decisions without their input.
“The establishment of state police was a key discussion point due to ongoing security challenges across various regions, including the Northeast, Northcentral, Southwest, Southeast, and South-south,” Lawal said.
Please remember that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in February stressed the need for state police for the establishment of state police following recommendations from state governors aimed at addressing rising insecurity nationwide.
