King Charles III hosted Nigerian President Bola Tinubu at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, reaffirming the strong diplomatic ties between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

According to a statement released Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, this marked the first formal meeting between the two leaders since their interaction at the COP 28 Climate Summit in Dubai last year.

Onanuga added that the latest meeting was held at the request of King Charles.

“President Bola Tinubu was warmly received on Wednesday in London by His Majesty King Charles III at Buckingham Palace for a private meeting, highlighting the enduring and cherished relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom,” Onanuga said.

“This will be the two leaders’ first meeting since they met in Dubai at the COP 28 Climate Summit last year. The latest meeting was at the King’s request. Both leaders discussed global and regional matters of shared priority, focusing on the urgent and complex challenge of climate change.”

During the meeting, President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to combating climate change while balancing the nation’s energy security goals. He emphasized Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa and the Commonwealth in adopting global sustainability practices.

“President Tinubu and His Majesty also explored opportunities for collaboration in anticipation of the upcoming COP 29 Summit in Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa,” Onanuga said.

“President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s firm commitment to addressing climate change in a manner that aligns with the country’s energy security objectives whilst affirming Nigeria’s readiness to adopt global strategies for sustainability.”

The discussions also touched on climate financing, with both leaders expressing interest in strengthening partnerships to leverage Nigeria’s leadership in Africa and the Commonwealth.

Tinubu’s visit to the UK follows a trip to China, where he signed several bilateral agreements.

After his stay in the UK, he is expected to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
