The Federal Government says it has put measures in place to ensure residents displaced by insecurity and flood disasters in Niger State return to their homes soon.
The Vice President, Senator Kasim Shettima, gave the assurance when he flagged off the distribution of relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons at the IDP camp in Gwada, Shiroro LGA of Niger State on Friday.
Vice President Shettima said his visit was on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sympathize with the victims of insecurity and flood disasters in the state to assess the plights of the affected farmers and to encourage the citizens to have faith in the Tinubu-led administration.
He stated that the federal government was collaborating with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Niger State Government towards providing adequate support to the displaced persons in the state.
He revealed that each of the 36 states had received N3 billion from the federal government to ameliorate the impact of flooding and security challenges.
“This is a symbolic gesture to reassure the people of Niger State of the commitment of the Mr. President towards ameliorating the suffering of the people that have been affected by insecurity and flood disasters.
“Some states like Niger, Borno, Sokoto, Bayelsa, and Jigawa would enjoy more support from the federal government due to the magnitude of the disasters they have suffered,” Shettima said.
He called on well-meaning individuals to join the government in providing succour to the victims of flood disasters and insecurity across the country.
Niger State governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago had earlier said 14 of the 25 LGAs in the state have had flood experiences that caused loss of lives and destruction of properties in 2024.
