The Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, the Anambra State capital, has expanded programmes run by the Institution with the Institute for Peace, Security and Development Studies- IPSDS. The Institute now in its second year, first took off from the Dr Alex Ekwueme Centre for Multidisciplinary Research, also in the University.
Now in its second session since the Institute was established, it is open for new intakes for the current academic year. Courses like Development Studies, Conflict Resolutions, and Security Studies, which were previously not offered at any level by the University, are offered by the Institute, in a mixture of in-person and hybrid learning systems in which lecturers are drawn from within Unizik, different parts of Nigeria and around the world, especially Europe and America. Some lecturers drawn from outside the University include Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji, a development expert, who recently served as the Resident Electoral Commissioner – REC, for the Independent National Electoral Commission – INEC, in Anambra State. Prof. Sheriff Folarin, a developmental researcher and an expert in Rwanda’s transformational ‘miracle’, and also a professor of Political Science at the Texas State University in Houston, Texas USA. Similarly, many experienced security experts have been added to the academic strength of the Institute.
Generally, the Institute offers three executive courses at PhD, M. Sc, and PGD levels, they are; Development Studies, Peace and Conflict Resolutions, and Security and Safety Studies. These courses are novel at Unizik. They are also in high demand as much as tailored to address prevailing challenges of the day.
The Director of the Institute, Prof. Jaja Nwanegbo said that the Institute is determined to merge learning with practice and provide real solutions to social and political problems.
