The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has announced a N2.8 billion grant from Google to enhance artificial intelligence, AI, talent development across Nigeria.
The grant, provided through Google to Data Science Nigeria, will support the Ministry’s ongoing initiatives to upskill Nigerian youth, underemployed, and unemployed citizens, focusing on advanced AI skill development and education.
This funding forms part of Google’s broader $5.8 million commitment to digital skills programmes across sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, highlighted the importance of Google’s support in advancing Nigeria’s digital transformation.
“This support from Google is a testament to our commitment to positioning Nigeria as a leader in AI innovation. By leveraging Google’s expertise and resources, we are creating opportunities to equip Nigerians with the skills they need to thrive in the global digital economy. This is a major step forward in our journey towards a more inclusive and innovative future for all Nigerians,” he said.
The N2.8 billion grant will bolster several AI-driven initiatives, including:
- DeepTech Ready Upskilling Programme – Aiming to equip 20,000 young Nigerians with advanced skills in data science and AI to prepa re them for careers in the digital economy.
- Experience AI Programme – Targeting 25,000 educators to teach AI fundamentals to 125,000 young Nigerians, inspiring the next generation of AI innovators.
- Government AI Campus Programme – Focused on training policymakers and public servants in AI policymaking for responsible AI policy development.
Earlier in the year, the Ministry hosted the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy workshop and subsequently released the National AI Strategy to utilise AI in fostering economic growth, improved governance, and the overall welfare of Nigerians.
This support from Google builds upon these foundations, reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a leader in AI innovation in Africa.
Furthermore, the Ministry and Google announced the beneficiaries of the AI Fund, launched by the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in partnership with Google.
Each selected startup will receive ₦100 million, up to $3.5 million in Google Cloud Credits, AI tools, mentorship from Google’s experts, and access to a global innovation network.
The 10 startups benefiting from this fund include BetaLife Health, Bunce, CDIAL AI, Farmspeak, Lendsqr, ProDevs, Rana Energy, SaaSPro Health, Towntalk, and Trade Lenda.
These startups focus on critical sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and governance, addressing local challenges and driving economic growth through AI applications.
Matt Brittin, Google’s President for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, expressed the company’s dedication to Africa’s digital ecosystem: “Across Africa, entrepreneurs are harnessing the power of technology, including AI, to address large-scale societal challenges. Google remains committed to supporting these innovators, helping them expand their impact across the continent and beyond.”
This initiative aligns with recent findings suggesting that AI could contribute up to $15 billion to Nigeria’s economy by 2030, according to Public First.
The Ministry’s collaboration with Google aims to build a sustainable AI ecosystem, fostering innovation and creating a positive economic and social impact across Nigeria.
