The Anambra State House of Assembly member representing Njikoka I constituency, Hon. Chidi Ibemeka, has commenced up skilling programme to train and equip his constituents with all the necessary tools that would enable them to thrive in the marketplace. The programme which commenced in Enugwu-Ukwu a few days ago, has St. Anthony’s Catholic Church Hall Enugwu-Ukwu, as the venue of the training. However, this training is expected to be extended throughout the Njikoka I State Constituency.

In an exclusive interview with the West African Pilot News, Hon. Ibemeka revealed that the skill centre was inspired by the problem of joblessness or underemployment both of which can be seriously mitigated through upskilling. “Having seen how the youths and some productive mothers of my constituency go about seeking financial help, I decided to teach them how to fish, instead of just giving them fish. Skills are critical in the world’s progress so far. Therefore, I deemed it necessary to establish this skill acquisition centre to train and help in saving the future,” Hon. Chidi Ibemeka said.

Skill acqusition for now and the future

The following are the skills taught at the centre; fashion designing, clothes, and bag sewing. The market for these skills is huge. Clothes and bags are some of the primary needs of men, irrespective of age or economic status. There are also catering and confectioneries, with a huge market base and chances of profitability even at the lowest base of the market rungs. There is also training for CCTV and solar installation both of which are experiencing expansion as more people become interested in solar and desire to use tech-enhanced security for their homes and offices. Other skills his constituents can learn are air conditioning and cooling system maintenance, hairdressing, and shoe making. Any of these skills properly learned and harnessed with a minimal market share will completely transform the economic fortunes of the beneficiary.

At the moment according to Hon. Ibemeka, 450 trainees are undergoing the training. “Presently, we have about 450 candidates enrolled. The programme for Batch A will run for one year. By the grace of God, in the end, the serious and certified candidates recommended by the General Coordinator will get grants and support in various other means,” Hon. Ibemeka said, as he hinted that the target is to equip at least 1000 candidates yearly.
