The Enugu State Ministry of Education has confirmed and condemned the brutal beating of a student of the Federal Government College Enugu by his fellow students within the school premises.

The incident according to Mr. Joshua Ogunshino, the Vice President Student Affairs and Dr. Takor, the Senior Boarding House Master of the Federal Government College Enugu, happened on Friday 8th of November, 2024 during school break time.

The video which went viral on socio media saw a group of Senior Secondary 3 (SS3) boys brutally beating an SS1 student who was allegedly caught smoking marijuana.

The senior boys instead of reporting the boy to relevant authorities for appropriate disciplinary measures to be meted on him took laws into their hands assaulting the boy in the most inhumane manner which has generated public outcry.

Condemning such physical assaults in schools, the Enugu state Commissioner for Education, Professor Ndubueze Mbah in a press statement signed on Monday the 11th of November, 2024, reiterates the State government’s zero tolerance to bullying and abuse in schools in the state.

Prof Mbah revealed that Ministry of Education has commenced investigation and the culprits involved in the brutal beating will be prosecuted.

Also he said the Ministry is currently reviewing welfare of students at the College.

“The Enugu State Ministry of Education is in communication with the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure that appropriate sanctions are applied to negligent school managers and responsible culprits.”

“The Enugu State Ministry of Education hereby reminds all educational institutions that the safety and well-being of students must be paramount. Any form of harassment, intimidation or physical violence violates the core values of respect, equality and freedom that should govern students’ academic experiences,” Mbah said.

Both the assaulters and the victim have been suspended indefinitely even as further investigation is ongoing.
