The Chair of Jose A Centeno International Centre for Medical Geology Research at Nasarawa State University in Keffi, Prof. Ktso Nghargbu, represented Nigeria during the just concluded 12th Conference on African Geology. The African Geology Conference which was held at Assuit University, Egypt, in North Africa, was attended by geologists across Africa.

 

Recently, the field of medical geology is emerging as a critical aspect of geology that can contribute significantly to all kinds of modern health challenges, but has been largely unexplored. This 12th African Geology Conference has as its main focus, modalities to raise funds and support geological research and mineral sector across Africa. At this conference, Prof. Ktso presented a paper on innovative funding for the mineral sector in Africa, calling for more funding opportunities from the government and private sector.

At the conference in Egypt, Nasarawa State University Nigeria, and Assuit University Egypt, reached an agreement on collaboration in research and related issues around development in Africa.

Speaking on the essence of the conference and its relevance in deepening research findings that will enhance the mineral sector in Africa, Prof. Ktso said that the engagements are vital for a new chapter of collaboration for Africa’s development. He thanked the Solid Mineral Development Fund – SMDF, and Nasarawa State University, for their confidence and support.

The USA Geology Conference

From Egypt, Prof. Ktso proceeded to the United States of America for the General Assembly of the World Federation of Hydrotherapy and Climatotherapy. At this conference, Prof. Ktso represented Nigeria and North America. The focus of the global geology conference in the US was, “Training Standards for Balneology and Thermal Medicine”. Similarly, Prof. Ktso presented two papers on training standards where he used the curriculum of the Centre for Medical Geology Research at Nasarawa State University, to advance his narrative on training standards for thermal and balneology medicine.
