The Enugu State Police Command has arrested and paraded two out of a seven-man criminal gang, who murdered in cold blood Chief Stephen Aniagu the Chairman of Ogbete Main Market Traders Association (OMMATA) on the 14th of September, 2024.
Briefing newsmen at the Police headquarters in Enugu on Friday, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the Police Public Relations Officer said the arrest of the two suspects on the 8th and 9th of November 2024 was successful due to concerted efforts of the Police Detectives of the Anti-Robbery Section (D9), the State CID and Operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad of the Command.
The two male suspects are Chukwudi Aboshi, a 28-year-old native of Anike in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, and Ani Innocent Ebuka (a.k.a. Excellent), a driver and native of Isigwe-Ugbawka in Nkanu East Local Government Area.
Both suspects were arrested in Akwuke, Awkunanaw, in Enugu South LGA of Enugu State while five out of the notorious gang are still at large.
Aboshi and Ani confessed to the crime revealing a forest at Mmaku in Awgu Local Government Area as their camp.
“During interrogation, both suspects confessed to their active involvement in the crime. They provided detailed accounts of how they attacked Mr. Aniagu, snatched his vehicle, and similarly shot another male driver severally at the same location on the night of the murder, snatching his Toyota Corolla as well. Fortunately, he is stable and undergoing treatment,” the DSP Ndukwe, PPRO said.
The suspects he said have also confessed to other crimes they committed and the names of their gang members at large;
They are Mr. Obinna Nnamani of Ndiagu Ogbo-Ezinne, Akpugo in Nkanu West LGA; Mr. Okoro Chisom of Ihie community in Awgu LGA; and the Chief Priest of the gang, Mr. Pius Anoja aka Ezeobo of Mmaku community in Awgu LGA.
Details of the other male suspects are sketchy as their real names are unknown; Miracle aka C-C or White of the Mmaku community in Awgu LGA and Israel whose full name and nativity are unknown.
Other suspects at large include Mosquito and Anunti both of Mmaku community in Awgu LGA and Iyangbakwu of Akegbe-Ugwu community in Nkanu West LGA.
DSP Ndukwe further revealed that the suspects are cooperating with the Police in the ongoing search for the gang members at large and efforts to recover the stolen vehicles and weapons used to commit the crimes; “One (1) Tecno Android phone, snatched from a victim in the crimes, and objects suspected to charms were recovered from them,” DSP Ndukwe reveals.
Recall that the late Stephen Aniagu was killed at about 8:20 pm on September 14, 2024, at Topland, along Amechi Road in Enugu; the deceased’s murderers also made away with his blue-colored Toyota Corolla car which he was driving that night.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu has reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to rid the state of criminals to ensure the security of residents in the state.
CP Uzuegbu then urged citizens of the State to remain vigilant, and law-abiding, and continue to support the police in maintaining peace, law, and order.
