The Enugu State Police Command through collaborative operations with the Emene Division, Crack and Octopus Tactical Squads, and the Neighborhood Watch Group arrested an interstate criminal syndicate specialized in armed robbery and financial fraud.

The arrest of the eight male suspects by the team was in response to a distress call reporting an armed robbery attack at an estate in Emene in Enugu East Local Government Area.

Police operatives from the Emene Division responding to the call with the Neighbourhood Watch members were able to apprehend Ismaila Isah but his cohorts escaped; a locally made pistol, the sum of three hundred thousand, four hundred and fifty naira only (₦300,450.00) and some stolen items were recovered from him.

The Emene Division however later transferred Ismaila Isah to the Crack Tactical Squad for further investigation.

His confessional statements and subsequent discreet investigations led to the arrest of 28-year-old dismissed soldier Sadik Ahmed, Abbas Usman (33 years), Mubarak Garba (24 years), Abubakar Haruna (23 years), and Abubakar Sani (32 years) at their hideouts in New Garriki, Awkunanaw in Enugu.

The other 2 members of the gang were later arrested in Owerri in Imo state based on intelligence report gathered by operatives of the Octopus Tactical Squad; they are Obiri Chukwuebuka (22 years) and Bright Omeniru (22 years).

Items recovered from the gang include two locally made pistols loaded with a live and expended cartridge, a cash sum of three hundred thousand, four hundred and fifty Naira (₦300,450.00), ten laptops, land documents, ten mobile phones, assorted jewelries and watches, one MP3 player, one headphone, four power banks, two SIM cards, footwear, and bags.

The hoodlums have confessed to committing multiple armed robberies within the Enugu metropolis and fraudulent withdrawal funds from their victim’s bank account using stolen phones.

With the help of the dismissed soldier in their gang, the hoodlums easily move the stolen items to different states to sell, bypassing checkpoints due to his background as a former security agent.

Commending the operatives for successful bursting of the gang, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu urged them to sustain the efforts against criminal activities especially during this festive season.

The suspects will be arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigations.
