The Nigeria Meteorological Agency – NiMet – has fulfilled its promise to install a weather station within the premises of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University in Igbariam. This was a promise made during the University’s climate action summit championed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Kate Omenugha, to create awareness and mobilize the University community to take concerted action against the adverse effects of climate change in the university.
The well-attended climate summit a few months ago saw the university community under the guidance of the climate action team set up by the Vice Chancellor, and led by Prof. Kingsley Nwozor, commit to planting thousands of trees to sustain the university community and wither the adverse impact of climate change in the university. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Omenugha in her remarks during the summit, observed that the university community is subjected to the unpleasant impact of heavy winds which often destroy building roofs within the University.
During the climate change summit, NiMet announced a partnership with Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University and promised to install a modern weather station within the school as part of its contribution to the University’s drive for a sustainable environment. This promise has now been fulfilled with the installation of a modern weather station within the University campus in Igbariam.
Installed just beside the Administrative Block of the University, the weather station will enhance research, learning, and planning for the university, according to Mr. Christian Njoku, a representative of NiMet and a meteorologist. Njoku further explained that the station is built to measure wind speed, temperature, solar radiation, humidity, and precipitation. These will help to demystify weather patterns and support farmers with better practices as well as improved output. The team of installers from NiMet, was equally received at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University by Prof. Kingsley Nwozor
On the part of the team lead of the University’s strategic climate action team Prof. Kingsley Nwozor, the installation speaks to the three Vs of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Omenugha, which are; Values, Visibility, and Viability. “This installation,” Prof. Nwozor said, “enhances the value we bring to education and research, providing students and faculties with the tools for innovative projects…The station also elevates our visibility as a hub for cutting-edge research, attracting collaborations and funding opportunities,” Prof. Nwozor said.
