Two officers of the Borno State Police Command were killed in an attack by suspected Boko Haram terrorists on the Nganzai Police Division in the early hours of Wednesday.

The attack, which happened at about 12:10 a.m., was confirmed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, in a statement released on Thursday.

“At about 12:10 a.m., unknown gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists attempted to invade Nganzai Police Division. Gallant officers on duty repelled the terrorists after a series of gun battles,” Daso stated.

During the attack, the terrorists reportedly threw hand grenades, which landed on a shelter tent, fatally wounding two officers.

The deceased officers were later identified as Inspector Bartholomew Kalawa and Corporal Mustapha Huzaifat.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusufu Mohammed Lawal, visited the station, commended the officers for their bravery, and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.

“The Commissioner of Police commended the gallant officers who stood their ground to prevent the attack and condoled with the families of the two officers who lost their lives,” the statement noted.

During the scene assessment, the police recovered two hand grenades used by the terrorists.

In response, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, condemned the attack, ordering an immediate clampdown on the perpetrators.

In a press release issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP directed the Zone 15 Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, to mobilise resources and collaborate with other security agencies to bring the culprits to justice.

“No cop-killer will go unpunished,” the IGP affirmed, adding that benefits and entitlements of the deceased officers would be paid to their families promptly.

The IGP reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and vowed that those responsible for the attack would face the full wrath of the law.
