The Kano State Government has officially withdrawn all criminal charges against individuals arrested during the #EndSARS protests in the state.
This decision follows a petition submitted by the civil society organisation, Citizens’ Gavel, to the Attorney-General of the State, urging him to exercise his constitutional powers under Section 211(1)(c) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The petition, submitted on 5th November 2024, called for the immediate dismissal of all charges levelled against peaceful protesters who were arrested during the nationwide demonstrations that took place from 1st to 10th August 2024.
Citizens’ Gavel, in a statement issued yesterday, revealed that the Attorney-General formally withdrew the charges on Monday, 27th January 2025.
The organisation lamented that the protesters faced baseless accusations, including conspiracy to commit treason, unlawful assembly, and public disturbance.
Citizens’ Gavel provided free legal aid and representation to the affected individuals, filing human rights enforcement applications in court.
“Five months after, the withdrawal of these charges marks a significant victory for justice, reaffirming the rights of citizens to peacefully express their grievances without fear of persecution,” stated Rachael Adio, Communications Associate at Citizens’ Gavel.
“Citizens’ Gavel commends the Honourable Attorney-General of Kano State for upholding the rule of law and respecting the constitutional freedoms of Nigerians.”
The organisation reiterated its commitment to advocating for justice, protecting civil liberties, and ensuring accountability within the justice system. “We believe that a Nigeria where the rights of the people to dissent and peaceful protest are safeguarded is possible,” the statement concluded.
