Clinical staff at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, OAUTHC, in Ile-Ife, Osun State has threatened to commence industrial action on February 3, 2025 over unpaid salaries.

The strike is expected to impact medical services at OAUTHC, potentially disrupting healthcare delivery in the region.

In a statement jointly signed by its chairman, Dr Olufemi Ogundipe, and the general secretary, Dr Tajudin Adetunji, MDCAN, said the decision follows a directive from the southwest zone of the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria, MDCAN.

It stated that the strike notice comes after a 21-day ultimatum issued to university vice-chancellors in the zone.

The association is demanding the placement of clinical lecturers on the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale, CONMESS, a structure already implemented in other medical colleges across Nigerian universities.

It noted that, failure to adopt the CONMESS salary structure has resulted in significant income disparities for clinical lecturers at OAU, arguing that year of income loss and salary discrepancies have created an unsustainable situation for its members.

“The immediate implementation of the CONMESS salary scale is necessary to address the concerns of clinical staff, unless our demands are met, the planned strike will proceed as scheduled.

“We are demanding the immediate payment of CONMESS to all clinical lecturers in OAU to save the future of medical education in the foremost citadel of learning.

“While calling on the management of OAU to act swiftly, the Association lamented the dearth of clinical lecturers and the dwindling fortunes of medical education in the country, blaming the development on the nonchalant attitude of the authorities to challenges ravaging the nation’s health sector,” MDCAN insisted.

The impending strike notice may affect final-year dental students at OAU.

A clinical lecturer at the university, who preferred to remain anonymous to avoid victimization, spoke to journalists about the likely implications of the strike.

“The Dental final-year examination commenced on Monday and will be badly affected by the strike if urgent measures are not taken to avert it.

“Other professional exams scheduled to hold in February may also be in jeopardy. Our resolve as an association is to go ahead with the strike. And with that position, the effects on students’ examinations and other academic activities are better imagined than experienced,” he said.
