The management of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University has reacted to a frivolous report on an alleged petition against the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Kate Omenugha, filled by unnamed staffers of the university through their lawyer to the EFCC. The alleged petition which gained access to the social media through a blog post, has received knocks from various quarters.

In a press statement by Dr. Harrison Madubueze the Public Relations Officer of the University, he said that the University couldn’t have possibly brought itself down by responding to such baseless lies, but will however make certain clarifications in consonance with the focus of the university’s management. “Our first reaction was not to dignify manifest falsehood. But given the reach of this calculated attempt to tarnish both the Ag VC and the University, we consider it fitting to put this response for records. For the sake of clarity, the University will not lend credence to transparently unfounded accusations,” a part of the statement reads.

Dr. Madubueze who noted that neither the University nor the VC has been invited by any law enforcement agency and that they have not been informed of any petition, wondered how such a petition then found its way into the media. “It is unquestionably curious that an alleged petition which has yet to result in any official inquiry has already been turned into a media spectacle. This development exposes the true motives of the faceless beings behind these allegations,” the University PRO said.

Recently, the Council of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University called for applications from qualified individuals for the position of Vice-Chancellor, which will give room for substantive appointment to the position of Vice-Chancellor of the university. This development is generating rancor among some interested parties, which has opened opportunities for malicious accusations targeted at the Acting Vice-Chancellor, who has been in an acting capacity for over one year now.

The University’s PRO then assured that this would not deter the VC or the university. “The university community and members of the public can rest, assured that these unfounded allegations and accompanying cacophony will not deter the Ag VC from her passionate and transformative service to our students and their families, our host communities, and to our State and our Country,” Madubueze said.

In a similar development, the President of the Students’ Union Government of the university, Comrade Ezehiri Josephat, has issued a statement condemning the said petition which he referred to as a “defamatory publication, which reeks of misrepresentation and lacks any semblance of merit”. According to the SUG president, “The students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University hereby express our utmost dismay and consternation upon receiving a malicious memo circulating on social media aimed at tarnishing the reputation of our Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha.”
