Nigerian singer Tems has made history by winning the ‘Best African Music Performance’ award at the 67th Grammys for her hit single ‘Love Me Jeje’.

This marks her second Grammy win, following her previous award in 2023. ‘Love Me JeJe’ is a reimagined version of Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 classic, blending Afrobeats with contemporary R&B elements.

The 67th Annual Grammy Awards, held on Sunday, 2 February 2025 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, celebrated outstanding achievements in the music industry over the past year.

Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, had previously garnered significant attention with her debut studio album, “Born in the Wild,” released on 7 June 2024.

The album received critical acclaim and commercial success, peaking at number fifty-six on the US Billboard 200, making it the highest-charting album by a Nigerian female artist to date.

‘Born in the Wild’ was also nominated for Best Global Music Album, and its tracks ‘Burning’ and ‘Love Me JeJe’ earned nominations for Best R&B Song and Best African Music Performance, respectively.

In addition to Tems’ success, several other Nigerian artists received nominations at this year’s Grammys.

In the Best African Music Performance category, Burna Boy was nominated for his song ‘Higher’, Asake and Wizkid for their collaboration ‘MMS’, Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay for ‘Sensational’, and Yemi Alade for her track ‘Tomorrow’.

Despite their impressive contributions, these artists did not secure wins in their respective categories.
