A fire outbreak at an Islamic boarding school in Kaura-Namoda, Zamfara State, has claimed the lives of at least 17 students, with several others sustaining serious injuries.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday night, burning for about three hours before it was finally brought under control.

The affected school, identified as Mallam Ghali, housed over 100 students in its study hall when the fire broke out. Although many managed to escape, some were trapped in the inferno.

Abdulrasaq Kaura, a resident of the area, said the fire was ignited by sticks locally known as kara.

“It happened at Makaranta Mallam Ghali, inside their study hall. There were about 100 of them (students) in the house. After they evacuated the students, they thought none of them remained inside the house,” he said. “When they returned

after the fire, they started seeing their legs, hands… they got burnt beyond recognition.”

The bodies of the deceased students have been buried, while those injured are receiving medical attention.

Local authorities and emergency responders were at the scene to assist, but the extent of the damage had already been severe.

Eyewitnesses described the fire as devastating, noting that efforts to contain it were hampered by its intensity.
