The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to supporting Nigerian athletes as they strive for glory on the continental stage.

This is coming just days before the 2025 All-African Senior Badminton Championship in Douala, Cameroon.

Speaking ahead of Team Nigeria’s departure, Olopade highlighted the rising status of badminton in the country and commended the leadership of Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), for revitalizing the sport.

“For us at the NSC, and speaking on behalf of our chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, badminton has become a key part of Nigeria’s sporting ecosystem. President Orbih and his team have brought fresh energy to the game, and we can see the results in the performances of our athletes, including Aanu Opeyori,” Olopade stated.

Nigeria’s badminton contingent, featuring ten top players—five men and five women—will compete across all categories: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.

Among them is defending champion Anuoluwapo Opeyori, who is determined to retain his African singles title after last year’s gold-winning performance.

During a farewell visit to the team’s Abuja training camp on Wednesday, Olopade reassured the players of the NSC’s unwavering support and urged them to make the country proud.

“Our chairman is fully committed to the growth of all sports in Nigeria, and badminton is no exception. These athletes are champions, and we are here to show them love, encouragement, and ensure they have everything they need to succeed,” he said.

BFN President Francis Orbih also expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, stating that their hard work and preparation would translate into strong performances in Douala.

“I believe in this team’s potential. The Director General’s visit is a huge morale booster, and we truly appreciate the support,” Orbih said.

At the previous edition of the championship in Cairo, Egypt, Team Nigeria finished with an impressive medal haul of one gold, two silver, and four bronze medals.

With the 2025 tournament scheduled from February 10–16, expectations are high for another outstanding performance from the nation’s shuttlers.

As Opeyori and his teammates gear up for battle, Nigerians will be hoping for more podium finishes and a display of dominance in African badminton.
