The Nigerian film industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor and academic, Dr Columbus Irosanga, who has died.
Renowned for his compelling portrayals of native doctors and traditional chiefs, Irosanga was a prominent figure in Nollywood.
Born in Okrika, Rivers State, Irosanga was not only an accomplished actor but also a respected academic. He served as a senior lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, contributing significantly to the education of upcoming actors and theatre practitioners.
His acting career spanned several decades, with notable performances in films such as ‘Isakaba’ (2003), where he played the formidable native doctor, Igbudu. Other significant works include ‘7 Kilometre’ (2015) and ‘Amanyanabo: The Eagle King” (2021).
Irosanga’s contributions to the arts were recognised with several awards, including ‘Best Actor in a Supporting Role’ at the Africa Movie Academy Awards and ‘Best Actor in a Drama’ at the City People Entertainment Awards.
Beyond the screen and classroom, Irosanga was known for his dedication to the cultural heritage of his community, often participating in local festivals and events that celebrated the rich traditions of Okrika.
He is survived by his wife and children. The cause of his death has not been made public yet.
