The General Superintendent of the Holy Spirit Mission, Ikeja, Lagos, Bishop Charles Ighele, has called for a ban on Valentine’s Day celebration in Nigeria, citing its association with immorality.
Speaking in an interview in Lagos, Bishop Ighele argued that the essence of the celebration had been distorted, shifting from humanitarian acts to an event that promotes romantic and sexual indulgence.
“Valentine’s Day is a Deception”
The cleric described Valentine’s Day as a deception from the devil, saying it was designed to impose “a universal day of immorality on earth.”
“Unfortunately, many boys, girls and married people have bought into this lie about love in disregard to the agape love described in the Bible,” he said.
Bishop Ighele further stated that the day was linked to a “romantic demon known as Cupid,” which he described as one of the rulers of darkness referenced in Ephesians 6:11-12.
“Cupid is the Roman name for the Greek god of love known as Eros. The English word erotic has its roots in Eros. The dictionary defines the word erotic as relating to or tending to arouse sexual desire or excitement,” he explained.
“The celebration of the day inspires sexual feelings in people and spreads sexual entertainment in order to further institutionalise sex.”
Calls for Government Intervention
The Bishop claimed that Cupid’s influence led to the designation of 14 February as a day for unchecked sexual indulgence and distortion of true love.
“The Bible tells us that ‘God is love’, and it is very certain that God will not want His type of love celebrated this way,” he said.
He, therefore, urged the government to proscribe Valentine’s Day celebration in Nigeria, warning that it had a negative impact on the country’s youth.
According to him, both state and non-state actors, including the church, schools, and families, must work together to promote values that uphold moral and social integrity.
He added that banning the celebration would help “redeem people from destruction.”
