Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has officially resumed his role, presiding over a plenary session on Tuesday, 27th February, despite his impeachment last month. His return followed the restoration of his security details by the police.
Obasa was impeached on 13th January by 36 lawmakers, who later elected Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker. However, Obasa challenged his removal in court, insisting the process was illegal. His comeback today saw the withdrawal of Meranda’s security aides while his own details were reinstated.
Speaking at the plenary, Obasa said, “The legislature remains the bedrock of democratic governance, and it is imperative that we uphold its sanctity and independence.”
Obasa’s return was marked by the presence of a limited number of legislators, including Hon. Nuraini Akinsanya, Hon. Yinka Eso, Hon. Jubreel Kareem, and Hon. Noheem Adams. Notably absent was Meranda.
Meanwhile, his supporters gathered outside the assembly complex, demanding his full reinstatement.
In a related development, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, clarified the adjustments in security assignments.
He announced, “The security personnel attached to the Speaker (Merand), who were earlier withdrawn, have since been restored.”
Jimoh further explained that the withdrawal was part of an ongoing audit of police personnel and firearms, a standard procedure being conducted across various state commands.
