In a surprising turn of events, Dr Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as Speaker of the 10th Lagos State House of Assembly, just weeks after his impeachment.
His return follows the resignation of Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, who held the position for only 49 days, making her the first female Speaker in the Assembly’s history.
Meranda, along with Deputy Speaker Fatai Mojeed, Chief Whip David Setonji, and Deputy Chief Whip Sanni Okanlawon, stepped down during an emotional plenary session on Monday.
Lawmakers and staff were visibly moved, with Desmond Elliot breaking down in tears while attempting to speak.
She was described as a “hero of democracy,” “role model,” and “compassionate leader” by colleagues.
The resignation paved the way for Obasa’s swift return, accompanied by a reshuffling of key positions.
Meranda was reinstated as Deputy Speaker, while David Setonji resumed his role as Deputy Chief Whip. Richard Kasumu was appointed Deputy Majority Leader, Adewale Temitope took over as Majority Leader and Mojeed Fatai was named Chief Whip.
Obasa’s reinstatement marks a major shift in the Assembly’s leadership.
His impeachment on 13 January 2025 followed allegations of financial misconduct, abuse of office, and authoritarian leadership. The motion, raised by Femi Saheed under Matters of Urgent Public Importance, led to his removal by 32 out of 40 members.
Obasa, who had served as Speaker since 2015, had been embroiled in multiple controversies, including accusations of misusing public funds.
In his return speech, Obasa expressed gratitude to his colleagues and party leaders for facilitating his reinstatement. “I appreciate your support and intervention in ensuring my return,” he said.
The plenary session saw the presence of key figures from the All Progressives Congress (APC), including Lagos APC Chairman Cornelius Ojelade and Deputy Chairman Michael Mayegun, alongside other party leaders.
