Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has said that heaven won’t fall if Governor Simi Fubara of Rivers State is impeached.
The minister spoke on Wednesday during a chat with journalists.
The former Rivers State Governor noted that if Governor Fubara is impeached heavens won’t fall, lambasting the Ijaw ethnic group over allegations and threats of vandalisation of oil pipelines and installations across the Niger Delta region, should the Governor be impeached.
According to him, nothing will happen if the governor is impeached.
The former Governor cautioned the Ijaw group, pointing out thst that nobody has a monopoly of violence.
He noted that other ethnic groups can also take the path of violence.
Wike said, “I can’t be a sitting president of a country and you’ll be threatening me with vandalisation of oil pipelines. I made an Ijaw man governor in Rivers State. Can an Ijaw man be Governor in Delta State? Can an Ijaw man be Governor in Akwa Ibom? The only state where an Ijaw man can be Governor is in Bayelsa State. They’re not a majority tribe in the Niger Delta region.”
He however, noted that if Fubara wants peace he should obey rule of law, represent the budget and represent the list of his commissioners to the State Assembly.
Recall that there was drama in the Rivers State House of Assembly complex on Wednesday as lawmakers locked the governor Siminalayi Fubara out of the quarter as he came for the presentation of the 2025 appropriations.
The lawmakers loyal to Fubara’s predecessor, Wike, have been holding their sessions at the quarters.
Also recall that the lawmakers led by Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, were last month reinstated by the Supreme Court.
Having barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other financial institutions from releasing the Federal allocation to the state government, the apex court also ordered Fubara to re-present the 2025 budget before the Amaewhule-led Assembly.
In what appeared as a retaliation over their sack by the state governor, the Assembly’s gate was under locks and keys, denying Fubara access to the quarter.
Addressing newsmen shortly after the incident, the Governor expressed his disappointment with the development as he recounted his efforts in reaching out to the Speaker of the Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, before his arrival this morning.
“I’m here this morning to comply with the judgement.
“Before my arrival, I already made several attempts including phone calls to reach the Speaker and other members.
“I also wrote a letter personally to the Honourable Speaker for this particular invitation.
“But it is unfortunate that at the gate, you can see that the place is completely sealed and there is no sign that anything is going to happen today.
“The reason why we are doing this is the interest of our people. I don’t think there is anything to be worried about. Maybe they are working on the letter. I expect to hear from them.” Fubara said.
