Following the recent death sentence passed on Jackson Sunday by the Supreme court while on self-defence, a group known as Gongola People’s Forum has called on Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State to save the convict from hangman’s noose.
Engr. Markus Gundiri, National Chairman of the forum, while addressing World Press conference in Yola, the Adamawa State capital said the herdsmen attacked convicted person with a knife, stressing that in self-defence inflicted injuries on the herdsman that led to his death.
“We are therefore calling on Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to save democracy and the rule of law from this legalistic manifestation of the Law. Sunday Jackson comes from a very poor background but was hopeful that acting in self-defense on his farm was a just and manly thing. The Law has treated him shabbily.
“We call upon his Excellency Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to let Sunday Jackson breathe fresh air and live. We in GPF join the whole world to ask the Governor to grant a state pardon to Sunday Jackson,” he said.
Engr Gundiri added that Jackson has been incarcerated for the past ten years while his case went through the courts and his family life was ruined, adding that during the altercation, Jackson was unarmed.
“Our primary objectives are to ensure justice to all our members who make up the majority ethnic nationalities that constitute the State’s total population, to ensure equity in governance; to ensure inclusivity to all, without consideration to Faith or background, to build peace and unity: and above all to ensure that all the citizens of Nigeria live under the umbrella of the rule of law without fear of molestation or oppression by their fellow men or the system,” Gundiri said.
Also speaking, Hajiya Halima Mohammed Hayatu called for join forces to ensure justice to Sunday Jackson.
In a remark, the Adamawa State Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Comrade Ishaka Donald Dedan assured that the story will be widely publicized.
