The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost two more lawmakers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), bringing the total number of defections in the 10th National Assembly to six.
On Tuesday, Hussaini Jallo, representing Igabi Federal Constituency in Kaduna, and Adamu Tanko, representing Gurara/Suleja/Tafa Federal Constituency, officially dumped the PDP.
Their defection letters were read on the floor of the House by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.
The lawmakers cited internal divisions in the PDP as their reason for leaving.
Jallo explained, “The current challenges besetting the party have made it untenable for me to continue under the present circumstances.”
He praised the Speaker’s leadership, saying it convinced him that APC was the right party for his legislative goals.
“I have been inspired by your (House Speaker) excellent and exemplary leadership at this time. And the inclusive manner in which you, through your dedication to national unity, good governance, and legislative excellence, have built my belief that the All Progressives Congress is the appropriate platform to further my legislative and constituency development agenda,” he said.
Tanko echoed similar concerns, saying that the ongoing crisis in the PDP has negatively impacted his psyche and ability to function effectively.
“Consequently, after careful consideration and consultation with my constituents, I have decided to defect from the PDP,” he added.
Their defections follow similar moves by Salisu Koko (Kebbi), Amos Magaji (Kaduna), Chris Nkwonta (Abia), and Eriatheke Ibori-Suenu (Delta).
However, House Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda opposed the move, arguing that defection must follow constitutional procedures.
His argument was that the lawmakers failed to prove they had left the PDP or officially joined the APC.
His protest was overruled by the Speaker, who congratulated the defectors.
