Anambra State House of Assembly during plenary on Tuesday, read for the second time, a bill for a law to protect persons living with HIV/aids in Anambra State. The bill extensively debated by House members, received an accelerated push to the next stage after being read for the second time. Many members of the Assembly who spoke in favour of the bill argued on the need to protect the persons living with HIV/aids, considering that they face serious discrimination because of their health situation.
The Bill was subsequently referred by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Somto Udeze, to the House Committee on Health under the chairmanship of Hon. Tony Muobike, and the report of the Committee is expected to be turned in within the next three weeks.
When passed and signed into law, the bill is expected to protect the identities and privacy of persons living with HIV and aids from various kinds of discrimination in Anambra State.
