Crime & SecurityNewsNigeria‘Otukpo is No Longer Safe’: Protesters Decry Rising Insecurity in Otukpo

Residents of Otukpo, the headquarters of Benue South Senatorial District, staged a massive protest on Tuesday against the escalating cases of kidnappings and killings in the area.

Chanting war songs and demanding action, the demonstrators blocked major roads, disrupting movement into the town.

Although the protest remained peaceful, the protesters insisted on urgent government intervention.

“Otukpo is no longer safe. We cannot sleep with our two eyes closed. Our communities are under constant attack by armed men, yet no arrests are made,” a youth leader said.

The demonstrators also blocked the Otukpo-Enugu Federal Highway, chanting, “We no go gree! We no go gree!”

Another protester, Dan, described the worsening situation. “Since the beginning of this year, robbery, kidnapping, and killings have increased in Otukpo. The government is not doing anything to stop it.”

The demonstration, which lasted for several hours, caused gridlock before local authorities eventually cleared the roads.

Reacting to the protests, Senator Abba Moro, who represents Benue South, condemned the rising insecurity, urging security agencies to act swiftly.

“The perpetrators are doing a great disservice to Otukpo,” he said. “The government at all levels must fulfil its constitutional duty by ensuring the protection of lives and property.”
