The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has approved the commencement of Law programmes in five Nigerian universities, following the successful outcome of verification visits conducted by the Nigerian Law School.
This resolution formed part of the key outcomes of the Council’s second quarterly hybrid meeting, held on Thursday, 17 April 2025, at the Council Chambers of the Nigerian Law School Headquarters, Bwari, Abuja. The meeting was presided over by Chief Emeka Ngige, OFR, SAN, Life Bencher.
In a press statement issued after the meeting, the CLE disclosed that the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School and Chairman of the Board of Studies, Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, Life Bencher, presented a report detailing the verification exercises carried out at Nigerian British University (Abia State), Federal University Otuoke (Bayelsa State), Modibbo Adama University (Yola), Prime University (Abuja), and Margaret Lawrence University (Abuja).
According to the Council, the visitation team expressed satisfaction with the facilities and academic structures in place at the institutions and subsequently recommended their approval to run Law programmes.
Each university has been granted a quota of 50 students at 100 level, beginning from the 2024/2025 academic session.
The Council also considered and approved a request by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), for an upward review of its admission quota from 220 to 250 students.
Meanwhile, the Council has released the results of the 2024 Bar Final Examinations.
Out of a total of 7,134 candidates who sat for the examination, 260 earned First Class Honours, 1,193 obtained Second Class Upper Division, 2,638 secured Second Class Lower Division, and 1,595 passed. A total of 327 candidates received conditional passes, while 940 failed and 181 were absent. This reflects an overall pass rate of 84 per cent.
The Council reaffirmed its dedication to upholding the standards of legal education in Nigeria, stating: “The Council remains committed to the continuous advancement of legal education and to maintaining the high standards in the training of aspiring legal practitioners in Nigeria.”
