NewsNigeriaPoliticsRibadu: We Inherited a Mess, But We’re Fixing It

The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has admitted that President Bola Tinubu’s administration met the country in a very bad shape, security-wise, but insists that things are getting better, slowly but surely.

Ribadu made this known during a high-level security meeting at the Benue State Government House in Makurdi, where he met with leaders and stakeholders to address the disturbing wave of violence in the state.

In his words, “We will defeat it. The entire country is with you,” Ribadu said, sympathising with the people of Benue who have endured repeated attacks and killings in recent times.

“I commiserate with the people of Benue and assure you that this is a trying period for all of us, but we are 100 per cent with you.”

While acknowledging the severity of the crisis, Ribadu stressed that Benue holds a critical place in the nation’s overall peace and stability.

“Benue is an extremely important state to Nigeria. We must fight and maintain Benue as a peaceful state. The Governor is doing well and we will support him,” he said.

On the work being done by security operatives, Ribadu noted that although it’s impossible to station armed forces in every corner of the country, significant progress is being made.

“Our armed forces are doing well. It is impossible to post security to every hamlet. What we need is support and for people to stop politicizing the killings. That will help us restore peace,” he said.

He further opened up on the challenges inherited by the current administration, saying:  “We inherited an extremely bad government. Things have improved. We’re addressing the issues. To do harm is easy, but to fix things takes time. We have considerably reduced the level of violence we met. This, too, we will confront.”

His visit comes at a tense time when communities in Benue and other parts of the country are crying out for stronger action and quicker results to curb the growing unprovoked attacks by terrorists.
