Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has cautioned political appointees in his administration against engaging in political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that any violation of this directive will attract immediate dismissal.
Governor Diri issued the warning on Wednesday during the 162nd State Executive Council meeting held in Yenagoa.
He expressed concern over the growing trend of political statements and activities by individuals who appear more interested in electioneering than governance.
“This is the time for governance, and we have started hearing public statements on the radio about who was contesting for one office or the other,” the Governor noted.
He reiterated the importance of adhering strictly to the political timetable as set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to him, it is premature and inappropriate for political campaigns or declarations to begin before official guidelines are released.
“I would like to advise politicians to follow the guidelines of political activities as enunciated by the Independent National Electoral Commission. Even the Bible tells us that there is time for everything,” he said.
Governor Diri made it clear that his administration remains committed to delivering on its developmental agenda and would not tolerate any distraction.
He warned appointees using the media or other platforms to advance political interests to desist or be prepared to face the consequences.
“Going forward, any political appointee who goes on air to talk about 2027 politics will be sacked. Any political appointee, no matter their office… and it is brought to my knowledge, consider yourself sacked,” he declared.
The Governor also appealed to non-appointees engaging in early political mobilisation to redirect their efforts towards productive activities that support the state’s growth and stability.
“Elections are in 2027, but some want to play God when they do not even know if they will see 2027. I am not praying for anybody’s death,” he said.
While affirming that everyone has the right to aspire to public office, Diri insisted such aspirations must align with the law. He concluded by emphasising that once INEC releases the appropriate guidelines, political activities will be welcomed in line with due process.
“As a political appointee, that has to stop today. Everybody is put on notice that if any of those social media political comments are seen, action will be taken,” he warned. “If you want to heat the polity, please resign.”
