A suicide bombing attempt near the Mogadishu Army Cantonment, commonly known as Abacha Barracks, along the Mararaba-Nyanya expressway in Abuja, resulted in the death of the bomber and injuries to a passerby on Monday afternoon.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the incident occurred at approximately 1:47 p.m. when a man wearing an improvised explosive device (IED) attempted to infiltrate the army barracks.
“Information gathered revealed that a suicide bomber attempted to sneak into the barrack but met his Waterloo as the IED exploded on him while trying to negotiate an entry,” NEMA stated.
The explosion happened at a bus stop opposite the barracks, an area frequented by commuters and vendors.
Emergency response teams, including personnel from NEMA, the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), swiftly cordoned off the area and commenced rescue operations.
“The suicide bomber died instantly leaving one passerby injured,” NEMA added.
The injured civilian were promptly evacuated to the National Hospital by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit of the Nigeria Police Force.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the identity of the bomber and any potential affiliations.
