Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has stripped the title of Waziri Adamawa conferred on the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

This is contained in a circular signed by Adama Felicity Mamman, Permanent Secretary, Department of Chieftaincy Affairs, Office of the Governor with reference number: MCA/GHY/S.135/VOL.1/38 dated 19th June, 2025 and copied to All Secretaries Emirates/Traditional Councils that all Kingmakers and Council members in the State must be indigene of their Chiefdoms.

The circular reads in part: “all Kingmakers and Council members from Adamawa Emirate Council must be indigene of Yola South, Yola North, Girei, Mayo-Belwa, Song and Zumo districts, while those of Mubi Emirate Council must be indigene of Mubi North and Mubi South, Vis-à-vis all Emirates/Traditional Councils in the State, However, those appointed or conferred with Only Traditional titles are to maintain their status regardless of their Local Government of indigene”.

Atiku, who is an indigene of Jada local government area, and other Council members who were indigenes of other local government areas not fall under the Adamawa Emirate Council would cease to be council members.

The circular, which takes immediate effect, said: “With this content of the Circular, all Kingmakers and Council members who are not indigenes of their Chiefdoms have been relieved of their appointments”.

Meanwhile, a bill to amend the Adamawa State Chiefs’ Appointment and Deposition Law, 2024 has passed the 1st and 2nd reading on the floor of the Adamawa State House of Assembly.

The bill, which was sent to the house by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, seeks to empower the Governor to appoint a Prince from the ruling houses to act in place of an incapacitated Emir or Chief during the period of incapacitation.

The motion for the first reading was moved by the Majority Leader and member representing Demsa Constituency, Kate Raymond Mamuno, and seconded by Musa Mahmud Kallamu of Mayo Belwa Constituency during Tuesday’s plenary.

After the first and second reading of the bill, the Speaker Bathiya Wesley, who presided over the plenary, acknowledged the significance of the bill and announced the composition of an ad hoc committee to scrutinize the bill and report back to the house within two weeks.

The committee, which will be chaired by the Deputy Speaker and Member representing Jada/Mbulo, Buba Muhammad Jijiwa, is tasked to invite all relevant bodies to a public hearing.
