Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, has vowed to take tougher action against those secretly aiding banditry in the state.
The Governor revealed on Wednesday that his government is reviewing existing laws to impose the death penalty or life imprisonment on anyone found guilty of passing information to bandits.
He made the announcement during condolence visits to two communities recently attacked by gunmen: Tadurga in Zuru Local Government Area and Kyebu in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area (LGA).
The attacks left many dead, several injured, and hundreds of livestock carted away by the assailants.
While addressing grieving residents, Governor Idris did not mince words in describing informants as a “dangerous threat” to peace and security, warning that his administration will not treat the issue with kid gloves.
“We are here to see things for ourselves, commiserate with you and reassure you about the urgent actions taken to bolster the security of lives and property of the people,” he told the villagers.
According to him, the state government has already concluded arrangements to set up a military base in the Zuru Emirate as part of broader efforts to boost security presence in the region.
He added that armoured personnel carriers and other equipment have been secured from Abuja, while temporary accommodation will be provided for the troops before a permanent base is built.
Governor Idris also disclosed that his administration has invested significantly in security logistics, listing the provision of 80 Hilux vehicles to security agencies, 1,500 motorcycles for vigilante groups, and increased allowances for operatives deployed to flashpoints across the state.
He warned traditional rulers and residents to refrain from politicising security matters or making reckless statements on social media, saying such conduct could undermine ongoing efforts to restore peace.
This is not the first time the governor has addressed the issue. In May 2024, following an attack in Tudun Bichi, also in Danko/Wasagu LGA, he had declared his readiness to approve capital punishment for anyone aiding criminal elements.
“Let it be known to the informants that whoever is convicted for volunteering information to bandits leading to the killing of innocent souls, I will sign his death warrant instantaneously,” Governor Idris said at the time.
Residents of the affected communities welcomed the governor’s visit, but many remain on edge as they await the promised military presence.
