The World Bank has named Mathew Verghis as its new Country Director for Nigeria.
Verghis, an Indian economist with over two decades of global development experience, officially resumed the role on 1st July, taking over from Ndiame Diop, who has moved on to a new assignment within the organisation.
In a statement issued on Friday, the World Bank described Verghis as a seasoned expert in economic policy, with a long track record of leadership across different regions.
“Mr. Verghis, an Indian national, brings over two decades of global experience in economic policy and development,” the statement read.
“He joined the World Bank in 1999 and has held senior leadership roles across Africa, East Asia, Europe, Central Asia, and most recently served as Regional Practice Director for Prosperity in the South Asia Region, based in Washington, D.C.”
Verghis himself expressed excitement over his new posting and said he was looking forward to making a real difference in Nigeria.
“I am honored to take on this role and to work alongside the government and people of Nigeria,” he said.
“There is real potential for transformative growth that can improve lives, create jobs, and expand opportunities for all. I’m also excited to experience firsthand the rich culture and incredible energy of Nigeria.”
According to the bank, Verghis will now lead its development engagement in Nigeria. His responsibilities include supervising key economic programmes, deepening ties with government and civil society, and boosting partnerships with other development players.
The World Bank added that the new country director holds both a Master’s and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Notre Dame, USA, and has written extensively on issues like poverty, growth, fiscal policy, and labour markets.
