Operatives of the Kebbi State Police Comand has arrested a 20-year-old mother, Maryam Atiku, for burying her newborn baby alive in the Nasarawa area of Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The Public Relations Officer of the Kebbi State Police Command, CSP Nafiu Abubakar in a statement said the mother, after delivering the baby girl, tied her neck with three pieces of wrappers, covered her mouth and took her to a place called Malam Yaro bush in Nasarawa area of Kamba, where she dug a shallow hole and buried the baby alive.
The police said the baby was taken to the General Hospital in Kamba, where she was treated and certified stable.
The statement reads in part: “Fortunately, one Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad went to his farm located around Mallam Yaro village and while in the farm, he observed a patch of soil resembling a fresh grave.
“He raised an alarm, which attracted the nearby people who rushed and assisted him in exhuming the baby alive.”
The statement said a team of detectives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Birnin Kebbi, swiftly swung into action and succeeded in arresting the suspect.
“During preliminary investigation, the suspect confessed to the crime and has been arraigned in court for prosecution,” it said.
