A former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Kayode Are, has formally assumed duty as Nigeria’s ambassador to the United States.
Are took up the post on Thursday after presenting his letter of credence to the United States government and President Donald Trump at the White House.
His appointment is part of the ambassadorial nominations submitted to the Senate by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in November 2025.
Tinubu had forwarded an initial list of 32 nominees for confirmation and subsequently sent another request seeking approval for three non-career ambassadors.
Are, an indigene of Ogun State, was among the non-career nominees, alongside Aminu Dalhatu from Jigawa State and Ayodele Oke from Oyo State.
In December 2025, the Senate confirmed 64 ambassadorial nominees, comprising 34 career diplomats and 30 non-career appointees.
The President later approved Are’s posting to Washington in January, formally designating him as Nigeria’s envoy to the United States.
