…Says Process Peaceful
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says 188 polling units, representing 7.69 per cent, experienced delays during Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State.
The commission disclosed this in a post on its social media pages, noting that 2,445 polling units were deployed for the election.
According to INEC, 2,257 polling units, representing 92.31 per cent, opened on schedule before 8:30 a.m., while the remaining 188 units commenced voting before 10:30 a.m. after minor delays.
“…all 2,445 Polling Units were successfully opened for the Governorship Election: 2,257 PUs (92.31%) opened on schedule before 8:30 a.m. 188 PUs (7.69%) experienced minor delays but commenced voting before 10:30 a.m. The process remained peaceful and orderly,” the post read.
The commission added that voting ended across most polling units at 2:30 p.m., describing the exercise as peaceful and orderly.
However, reports indicated that voter accreditation was delayed in some areas due to glitches with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), particularly during the biometric verification of elderly voters.
The technical issues led to long queues in several polling units, with some elderly voters expressing frustration after repeated attempts to complete the accreditation process.
Despite the challenges, voting was concluded across the state.
