The United States has imposed sanctions on a Nigerian-based individual and several companies over alleged links to the financing network of Islamic State.
In a statement released on Monday, US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the Nigerian was among three individuals and six entities designated for allegedly aiding the movement of funds for ISIS across multiple regions.
Pigott said the sanctions target a transnational network operating across France, Syria, Türkiye, and Nigeria, with roles ranging from logistics to financial coordination.
He explained that those listed include a France-based operative accused of supplying information on explosives to ISIS supporters, and a Syria-based facilitator said to have used cryptocurrency channels to move funds to associates in several countries, including the United States.
Also named is a Nigeria-based facilitator whose money-exchange businesses were allegedly used to move funds linked to the group.
US authorities subsequently published the identities of the affected individuals and entities under their Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list.
Among them is Mukhtar Adamu Muhammad, also known as Mukhtar Adamu, with an address listed at No. 45 Abimbola Street, off Capital Road, Morcas Agege, Lagos State. He is identified as a Nigerian national linked to ISIS-West Africa.
Two other individuals named are Boukich Abdelhakim, described as a Syria-based Dutch national, and Miloud Abderrahmane, a French citizen, both also linked to ISIS activities.
The US government further disclosed that three Nigerian companies have been sanctioned as part of the network. They are Generation Currency Bureau De Change Limited, Nine to Nine Exchange Bureau De Change Limited, both based in Lagos, and Manhattan Bureau De Change Limited located in Kano State.
According to Pigott, the measures are part of ongoing efforts by the United States to disrupt ISIS operations and financial pipelines globally.
He said the US “would continue to apply diplomatic and legal measures against ISIS and its supporters worldwide.”
